Science & Math of a Vinaigrette
Workshop Overview
What can a simple vinaigrette teach us about science and math?
In this hands-on virtual workshop, we’ll explore what happens when oil and vinegar meet, and why they separate. Through tasting, observation, prediction, and experimentation, we will investigate polarity, emulsification, and the role of an emulsifier using ingredients you can find in the kitchen.
We will also explore how changing the proportions of ingredients affects a vinaigrette’s flavor, texture, and stability, opening the door to meaningful connections with math, science, and sensory learning.
Participants will experience the lesson as a learner, then unpack the science behind the activities and consider how this approach can be adapted for thier own students.
Participants will leave with:
- A ready-to-use approach for teaching science through food
- Hands-on activities that invite students to observe, predict, test, and explain
- A practical way to introduce emulsification through a familiar food
- Ideas for connecting science and math to tasting and recipe design
Designed for educators working with grades 6-12.
