Food Studies Institute
Our mission is to improve the health and education of school age children and their families through a unique curriculum – Food is Elementary © – integrating academic disciplines with food, nutrition, culture, gardening, ecology and the arts.
We collaborate with schools and community organizations to initiate food literacy education programs that help children and their families develop healthy eating habits, learn about other cultures through foodways, and develop an appreciation of the natural world through gardening and ecology.
What We Offer
Food is Elementary © is an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to introduce children to healthful foods by learning about traditional foodways from around the world.
We contract with PreK-12 schools and community organizations to develop food literacy education programs that foster healthy eating habits and improve academic performance.
Our training program equips teachers to implement the Food is Elementary curriculum. Participants learn strategies for engaging children in sensory lessons on nutrition, cooking, and gardening.
“This unique program has the potential of changing the health destiny of an entire generation of children.”Charles R. Attwood, M.D.
“…Food is Elementary teaches students about healthy foods from around the world and builds on what our students learn in science, math, social studies, language arts, music and art. This provides educational enrichment to our students as well as teaching them about food, nutrition, exercise, and cooking. Not only is this beneficial to our students but it is also valuable to our parents and teachers.“Principal Matt Hornbeck, Hampstead Hill Academy, Baltimore, MD
“Food is Elementary is the most creative, organized, and crucial program I have ever been involved in. With this curriculum, children not only to learn to cook and eat healthy, but are also exposed to so many aspects of different cultures. I love it!”Denise, Teaching Assistant
